Visually impaired people have always preferred "hands on" professions, and in Asia, the tradition of the blind masseur is centuries old. Early writings reveal that the blind have been formally trained in massage in China, Japan and Korea since Medieval times. It is estimated that over 50,000 blind or visually impaired masseurs now earn a living in the Asia-Pacific region.
"An hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God" (John 16:2). I sometimes receive email reports from Heaven's Family partners, such as Asad in Northern India, that break my heart. They remind me of the life-and-death struggles our brothers and sisters frequently face as former Muslims who are living in—and nearly forgotten in—Islamic countries. Let me tell you about one such family, concerning whom I just received one of those emails.
Winning members of the world's unreached people groups to Christ often requires years of searching for cultural keys, plus relationship building and prayer. But sometimes a breakthrough can begin with a miracle. That is just what happened recently in a remote corner of China among an unreached people group known as the A-Che (pronounced "ah-chay").
When missionaries to Mexico, Jason and Nicole Fitzpatrick, first met 13-year-old Maria a few months ago, they learned that she had been living on the streets of Mexico City for three weeks. She had run away from home, because her drug-addicted mother was renting her to other drug addicts for sex for the equivalent of $4 per day. With that money, Maria's mother financed her own drug habit.
When I began thinking about Jesus' command to "lend, expecting nothing in return," I initially thought He meant, "Lend, and don't charge any interest on your loans," as I remembered the Mosaic Law forbade the people of Israel to charge interest on loans made to their poor countrymen (see Ex. 22:25).
