I was not prepared for what I was seeing. Sitting silently on elevated tiers of benches, about 50 young women sat under glaring lights. Like items to be auctioned, they were all marked with white badges emblazoned with black numbers. Each was dressed seductively. Some shifted nervously.
As I periodically travel around the world to visit poor believers whom Heaven's Family assists, I like to email "on the ground" reports in the form of blogs to our supporters. There are many of our supporters, however, who aren't subscribed to our blogs. So in this month's magazine, I'd like to share a few of the blogs I wrote in May from Cuba, a communist nation that has been called "the country of can't" by one of our partners there. He was making reference to the countless government regulations that suffocate Cuban ambitions. Heaven's Family has established eight thriving micro-banks in Cuba so far, and Christian borrowers are prospering in spite of their circumstances. Twenty-two-year-old Solange sits quietly at a sewing machine, concentrating as she carefully mends a seam. Her work helps her forget, at least for a time, all she has suffered during her short life, and it gives her some hope for her future. Methodically pumping the treadle with her feet, Solange advances the fabric one small stitch at a time, an effort that is, for her, emblematic of her dreams.
It was a new low for the one they called Lalo. Born Eduardo Gutierrez Del Angel of Pachuca, Mexico, Lalo had already lived more than a dozen years in drunkenness. But this night, as he lay in a rat-infested abandoned building, he awoke from his stupor to find a stray dog trying to eat his eye out. When I heard that awful detail, I couldn't help but notice the scar under his left eye. Lalo confessed that was one more night when he contemplated suicide.
It was reported by the Associated Press that, near the town of Gavas, eastern Turkey, one sheep among a large flock walked to the edge of cliff and jumped to its death. A second sheep quickly imitated the first, also leaping off the cliff to its death.
