Redeeming Lives from Refuse

Thousands of people scavenging through smoldering mountains of trash, trying not to lose their battle for day-to-day survival. No, it's not a post-apocalyptic movie. It's life for 13,000 people who live off Guatemala City's landfill.

Referred to as "guajeros," they live in shanties built from trash and scavenge the 40-acre dump for anything they can sell or eat.

Gangs control this lawless land, committing unimaginable atrocities, such as forcing children into sex trafficking or enlisting them to commit violent crimes.

But praise God, where there is evil and darkness, the light of Christ is shining! Under constant threat from gang leaders, brave teachers risk their lives to minister to the guajero children. They see these little boys and girls as ones created in the image of God. They see hope. They envision a bright future for them.

These teachers battle gangs, drugs, prostitution, thievery and other evils on their knees and in their classrooms. They believe the children are worth risking their lives for. They are currently providing a Christ-centered education to about 60 guajero children.
