Seven-month-old Mariam is in need of life-saving formula. Her family fled from ISIS and is now struggling for survival.

Mariam was born into chaos. Before she arrived on the scene, her parents and three older siblings fled from Syria to escape the brutality of ISIS.

With just the clothes on their back, they made the difficult journey through the mountains into Lebanon.

Since arriving in Lebanon two years ago, Mariam's family has managed to survive in a tent with only the most basic of necessities.

To further set the stage: work is very scarce in Lebanon to begin with. But employment for a Syrian refugee in Lebanon is practically non-existent in many places.

So, when sweet Mariam was born, her under-nourished and over-stressed mother was unable to breastfeed her. And she had no money to purchase formula. In order to feed little Mariam, her mother boiled what she had—rice—and fed the "rice water" to her.

Mariam may look "plump" in the photo, but this is often a sign of malnourishment in the developing world. The extreme lack of protein causes swelling in the gut and retention of water.

Mariam's frail body has been surviving on rice water since birth. If she continues on this diet, her body and brain can suffer serious—if not deadly—consequences.

The nutrient-rich formula that she desperately needs costs about $3.21 per day. (Roughly $23/week, or $1,172/year.)

Mariam is one of five refugee babies in this area in desperate need of formula.

This tangible act of compassion will also open doors to share the gospel and demonstrate God's love to Syrian Muslim refugees.
