Every month, Heaven’s Family helps far more people than we could ever highlight in our bi-monthly newsletter. For that reason, this page contains additional photos and stories of some of the “least of these” among our spiritual family whom we’ve recently been blessed to serve.
They had, as every Sunday, gathered wearing their finest, arriving to share hugs and handshakes. Worship had been joyful, full of rhythmic African harmonies. The children had just been dismissed for children's church inside the parsonage on the church compound. None who remained in the simple sanctuary of the African Inland Church in Garissa, Kenya, dreamed that within minutes, many among them would be in heaven. It was July 1, 2012.
Opportunities. More than anything else, that is what the poor around the world lack. An opportunity to gain a valuable education, a marketable skill, employment, tools for a trade, or a loan to start a business can make the difference between poverty and prosperity. That is why Heaven's Family works to provide, through our numerous focused funds, various opportunities to the "least of these" among Christ's followers. Opportunities give the poor a chance to help themselves through their own efforts.
Cubans can be sentenced up to 30 years in prison for slaughtering a cow for its meat? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I might have expected such a penalty in a Hindu country where cows are considered sacred, but Cuba? Our Cuban host assured me that I had understood him correctly.
It could be the world's longest current civil war, a conflict all but ignored by the rest of the world during its 64 long years. On one side of the fighting is the Burmese army, dutifully obeying the whims of paranoid military leaders; on the other, the Karen people, the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar (Burma), who long for autonomy. Many have fled the genocide and now live in refugee camps along the Thai border, hoping to ultimately start a new life in one of a dozen welcoming nations. In spite of many positive political reformations in Burma's recent years, the conflict still continues, and innocent lives are caught in the crossfire.
