STREET KIDS FOR SALE. That's the daily heart-breaking reality I was told takes place in the Cambodia/Thai border town of Poipet. So last February I went to see it for myself, and to seek ways that God wants to use Heaven's Family to change that appalling truth.
It may seem obvious to those of us who've always been blessed with safe drinking water straight from our kitchen faucets, but not all peoples of the world understand that microscopic organisms found in water from lakes and streams can bring sickness and death. Many refuse to believe in such invisible agents until it's proven to them.
As Netra Sharma left the prison for a second time, the police gave him permission to stay in their town on 3 conditions: (1) He doesn't preach the gospel; (2) He doesn't use any public well; and (3) He doesn't speak to anyone in public. Netra's crime: preaching the gospel. A police investigation proved that, but the Hindu radicals in Harinchara, India, wanted to silence him—and they controlled the police.
Rebecca's smile said it all, but then she added these precious words: "I feel blessed...God has given me a new uniform. I feel loved and taken care of. I actually look new!" It wasn't long ago that Rebecca was languishing in a slum that defies description, suffering abuse and neglect.
When we try to fix other people's problems it doesn't usually end well. But if we can help provide others with the tools they need, they can usually fix their own problems. So when I met Ammar (not his real name) last February in Erbil, Iraq, and learned about his skills, the gears started turning in my head.
I wish orphan care ministry was always smiles, giggles and success, but it isn't. Unfortunately, we sometimes find a "bad apple" orphanage director who isn't honest with us, or due to some other ongoing, unbiblical behavior we must end their support. It grieves me deeply because I know it's the children who suffer most from a director's poor choices. Though we may discontinue our financial support of a particular orphanage, however, that doesn't mean our prayer support for their kids should stop.
